Girls Golf 2020
While 2020 will go down in history as the year of COVID 19, for our girls golf team it will go down as the first time in 40 years that the Alliance High School Girls Golf team qualified as a team to go to the Nebraska State Girls Golf Tournament!
Our season started off at the Sidney Invitational where we placed 2nd as a team, improving our team score by 53 strokes over last year's score at Sidney. The next highlight of the year came at the Western Conference Invite where Julia Wilson placed 10th and earned All Conference Honors. We continued to see improvements over the season and especially saw improvements at the Mitchell Invite. The girls as a team broke the 400 team score mark with a score of 397 which earned them the team championship plaque. We also had two golfers, Julia Wilson and Morgan Young place in the top ten. We once again had individual medalists at the Chadron Invite where Julia Wilson and Regan Lambert both placed in the 10 ten. COVID 19 did invade our team and we saw individual golfers have to quarantine due to close contact to other individuals. This affected our ability to post team scores at both Ogallala and our own home meet. Everyone was back in time for Districts at McCook on October 5. McCook was by far the most challenging course we played all year. Hills, steep sand traps and a lot of native grass made this course especially challenging. The girls stayed steady and did not give up. It was exciting down to the very last putt but our girls persevered and posted a score that placed them 3rd (by one stroke over Chadron) and earned them a trip as a team to the state tournament. Julia Wilson also earned a top 10 finish.
The Class B Nebraska Girls State Golf Tournament was held in Gering. We enjoyed a community send off on Sunday night as we left for the 2 day tournament. High winds and nerves on Monday made it a challenging day for the golfers- scores were higher than we had hoped for but everyone came out Tuesday morning prepared for another day of golf. Smiles were on everyone’s faces and our fans came to cheer the girls on. Bittersweet tears fell as our seniors teed off on #18 Tuesday as they played their final hole of golf in high school competition. For our juniors, they had a taste of state competition and I hope they will remember that feeling as they prepare for 2021. 2020 will always be a memorable year for many reasons, but for us, it will be a year which made history.
